Takin' It to the schools
Takin' It to the Schools is a series of modular classes offered in your school designed to enhance your existing performing arts studies program with experiential learning. Teachers can choose from one or more of our class segments to create the right experience for their students. Our team of talented instructors (see bios) will come to your school to lead your one classroom of students (not to exceed 35 individuals) in one ore more of the following activities. The program is entirely modular and you can pick from any of the instructional and fun activities listed below. Get started today by contacting Education Director Melissa Weinstein to schedule your in-class experience.
CLASS NAME DESCRIPTION RECOMMENDED GRADES REQUIREMENTS PRICE PER HOUR OF INSTRUCTIION
Shake It Up with Shakespeare Shake things up with a demystification of Shakespeare! This workshop includes a brief history of Shakespeare, the basics of scansion and meter, and the different types of plays, plus examples of how one play can be interpreted many different ways. Students will then put this knowledge to use by ending the workshop with a short performance of a scene from the play discussed. If there is a specific play you’d like us to focus on, please let us know at time of registration and we’ll be happy to oblige! 9-12 An open, indoor space (a classroom, an unused cafeteria or gym, etc.). Students should be prepared for some movement. $125.00
Getting in the Act Preparing for a performance? Rehearsing a run-through? One of our seasoned directors will help your class get in the act by working directly with students to provide valuable scene coaching and acting tips, and to help develop their performance technique with exercises and games focusing on critical skills like enunciation and diction, pacing, volume, and on-stage body awareness. 3-12 An open, indoor space (a classroom, a cafeteria or gym, etc.). Students should be prepared for some movement. $125.00
Creating a Character Dive into the fascinating and dynamic world of character creation! Your students will discover the tactics and processes used by actors to flesh out a character and give it three-dimensionality, engaging in exercises and games that help bring characters to life. 3-12 An open, indoor space (a classroom, cafeteria or gym, etc.). Students should be prepared for some movement. $125.00
It Can't Be Wrong to Playwright Analyze the elements and structure of a play, taking a brief look at Shakespeare’s formulas and how they compare to modern plays. Students will collaborate in small groups to write a short scene or turn a short piece of literature into a play. 3-12 An open, indoor space (your classroom, cafeteria or gym, etc.). Students should be prepared for some movement. $125.00
Stage Combat: Unarmed and Understood Perform effective and believable unarmed stage combat with an emphasis on safety, while learning what it takes to make the conflict convincing to the audience. Students will practice a variety of slaps, kicks, grabs, punches, pulls, pushes, and more from our veteran Fight Choreographer. This is a very hands-on (and legs-on, arms-on, feet-on, etc!) workshop, so students must be dressed for movement. 5-12 A large open space with a flat, even surface (a field of grass outdoors, a cafeteria or gym, etc.) in which students can move freely. Students should be prepared for activity and movement, wearing closed-toe shoes. $125.00
Say "YES!": The Art of Making Things Up The ability to improvise is a significant tool in any actor’s skills tool belt, and saying “Yes!” to new ideas is one of the fundamental cornerstones of good improvisation. Students will learn the essential concepts of improvisation by participating in exercises, games, and activities to help them think fast on their feet and say “Yes!” with the best of them. 3-12 An open, indoor space (your classroom, an unused cafeteria or gym, etc.). Students should be prepared for some movement. $125.00
Demonstration: Stage Makeup This workshop is demonstration-based, showing the students in your cast how to apply basic stage makeup, age, and/or exaggerated character looks. If your students are already familiar with basic, age, and character makeup, the workshop can be tailored to demonstrate any one of the following instead:
• Animal makeup
• Fantasy makeup
• Special effects makeup
• Application of facial hair
Please specify the demonstration topic at time of registration. If you would like to include a hands-on component so students can practice application on themselves under an instructor’s guidance, please book an additional 30 minutes to this workshop, for a total of 90 minutes for demonstration and hands-on student practice. Makeup for student application during the hands-on portion is not provided by Shady Shakespeare.
9-12 An indoor space (a classroom, an unused cafeteria or gym, etc.) with tables and chairs. If booking an additional 30 minutes for hands-on instruction, please ensure the room has adequate mirrors and makeup supplies for student use.

$125.00

Additional 30 minutes $75.00

Demonstration: Costuming This workshop is demonstration-based, showcasing examples of costumes from various historical periods for close inspection, and examining how a costume designer looks at a show and what tools are used during the design process. Students will also learn behind-the-scenes tricks, such as how a simple garment, such as a suit jacket, can be altered in many ways to turn it into something else (it’s a suit jacket, it’s a frock coat, it’s a doublet, it’s magic!). 9-12 An indoor space (a classroom, an unused cafeteria or gym, etc.) with tables and chairs. $125.00
Workshop Series Can't get enough of one of our workshops? Any of our workshop programming can be expanded and/or combined into a series of classes, bringing hours of Shady Shakespeare instruction into your classroom! Because every classroom's needs are different, we tailor the structure of our workshop series to your needs, your schedule, and your school. Please contact us to find out more about how a workshop series can fit into your classroom. 3-12 Varies based on topic. Please contact us!
